Prairie State Legal Services is an organization that provides free legal advice to low-income individuals and people 60 years of age and older who have serious civil law problems and need legal help to resolve them. The mission of Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. is to ensure equal access to justice and fair treatment before the law by providing legal advice, advocacy, education and awareness activities that serve to protect basic human needs and uphold or enforce rights. You must meet our income and wealth guidelines or be at least 60 years old. Generally, a client is eligible if their household income is less than 125% of the federal poverty line. Prairie State can help people whose income is up to 200% of the poverty line if the household has certain expenses. We do not deal with criminal, immigration, personal injury, misconduct, employee settlements, traffic violations or probate. PSLS represents clients in a variety of substantive legal areas, including housing, disability, utilities, utilities, health, consumer, family and domestic violence. PSLS also has a tax clinic through which it advises and represents low-income individuals in tax disputes. There are opportunities for potential fellows who are interested in the general work of Prairie State, as well as potential fellows who wish to focus their work with the tax clinic.
Attorneys represent clients before administrative bodies and, in litigation and appeals, in state and federal courts. Prairie State employees are active participants in the communities they serve, working closely with social services and others to address issues facing low-income people, seniors, and people with disabilities. The program values creative and collaborative approaches to problem solving. Community education is an important part of the program`s work, as it maximizes the program`s impact over a wide geographic area. Prairie State Legal Services offers free legal aid to low- and middle-income individuals.
