The Prison Legal Education and Counselling (LEAP) programme for women helps women prisoners realize and enforce their human rights, particularly their right to access justice. Through LEAP, municipal legal centres regularly provide free legal aid clinics and some municipal legal education services in the three Greater Sydney Women`s Detention Centres: a specialist service that provides advice, support and representation to female inmates. They are able to help with issues related to bail, appeal, legal aid, probation, family and civil law, fines, debts, housing and rehabilitation. Representation is available for hearings before the state parole board, life imprisonment. Attend magistrates` hearings and complaints of segregation. Family and friends can also contact this service. Since 2018, WLS has also provided legal services to inmates at Mary Wade Correctional Centre. Prisoners can find information on accessing legal aid and other legal services in prison on the Prisoners` Legal Information Portal, available on “green computers”. Friends and family of prisoners can contact the PLS by phone: (02) 8688 3888 or fax: (02) 8688 3895. This episode introduces the Redfern Legal Centre`s police accountability practice.

The Prisoners Legal Service (PLS) is a national specialist service provided by Legal Aid NSW. PLS provides counselling, minor assistance and representation to detainees. Our service is free and confidential. PLS also participates in workshops in prisons where Back on Track legal training DVDs are presented. In 2013, a pilot legal literacy and information programme – the Prison Legal Literacy Project (LLiPP) – was launched, developed from LEAP. We provide independent advice and assistance on matters such as bail, appeal, legal aid, probation, classification and other prison matters. We also advise and support in other areas of prisoners` lives such as family law and civil law (fines, debts, housing) to help them reintegrate after their release. The Prisoners Legal Service (PLS) is a specialist service provided by Legal Aid NSW and provides a range of services to prisoners. Detainees who require an interview with a PLS lawyer should ask the prison wing officer, regional officer or social welfare agency to enter their name in the legal aid book. On the next visit (usually every 2 or 3 weeks), the names in the book are outsourced for a legal visit. If the prison is not visited by PLS, inmates can contact PLS by phone or request an audio-visual conference (AVL). The Women`s Legal Service (WLS NSW) provides this service in collaboration with the Wirringa Baiya Aboriginal Women`s Legal Centre and the Western Sydney Community Legal Centre to recognize the high unmet needs of inmates for civil and family justice services.

The LEAP responds to these needs by providing and facilitating access to legal services for incarcerated women, particularly Aboriginal women. Our main service is located at Parramatta Justice Precinct, 160 Marsden Street, Parramatta and is available from 9am to 5pm. LEAP received the NSW Law and Justice Foundation Community Law Centre Award in 2009. Women in detention can use the CADL system to contact WLS at #21. Legal clinics are held once a month at each location so that women can develop familiarity and confidence in the service. Prisoners can contact PLS on the Common Autodialing List (CADL) as a toll-free call – just press 11# (Legal Aid) or 02# (LawAccess) and apply for PLS or Prisoners Legal Service. PLS lawyers or video conferencing visit most prisons in New South Wales weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Prisoners can make an appointment using a legal aid booklet kept in the prison or contact the prisoners` legal service. Donate now. Ethical Jobs will DOUBLE it.

Only one week! Inmates who require an appointment with a PLS lawyer should ask their prison wing officer to write their name in the legal aid book. Register to attend our Bright Spark Awards night and learn more about this year`s extraordinary women nominees. Prisoners can call the prisoners` legal department free of charge via the prison`s CADL phone system – just press 11# (Legal Aid) and ask for PLS.
